Mma Dikolo

[A poem]

TW: Death

You drowned a child and told everyone he jumped.

Ga le swabe?
Ga le swabe ga le leba mmagwe mo matlhong
Le re a kgomotsege
Le re le maswabi
Le sa tswa go fitlha thipa ee rothang madi a gagwe.

You said he would be safe
Behind your steel fences
By your green grass
and your swimming pools.
He thought you would teach him how to swim.
He loved water without favouring the still or fearing the ocean.
Saw his whole future in that blue-tinged reflection.

We sent him there so you could teach him how to swim.

Nkgonne gatwe o kgamilwe ke mowa wa gagwe fa o boela badimong.
Tota e ne e se gore ke nako ya gagwe.
Dinonyane di le bone le mo lebile hela
Ekare ga le na mabogo aa ka mo thusang.
Diatla tsa lona di itse go fitlha buammaruri fela.

Le bolaile ba le kae?
Ntwa ya lona le e simolotse leng?
E bakilwe ke eng?
Le ikutlwa jang le bolaile mafatshe-fatshe a baratiwa bame?

Le fa le leka go phimola ditiro tsa lona
dinonyane kana di a le bona.
Le badimo ba rona.
Ga ba le lebale.
